The Basics of the Best Man Speech

Best Man Speech

The main thing to remember about the best man's speech is to keep it short and sweet. Funny, too - but no matter how funny you are, keep it short! Five to ten minutes tops.

The best man speech usually comes after several other speeches, after people have eaten and drunk and are often feeling sleepy. Wake them up with a funny first line, but don't expect to keep them with you if you drone on.

If you're nervous, don't think that drinking a lot will help - tipsy speeches are, more often than not, embarrassing speeches.

You can take the worry out of preparing your speech by getting a pre-written one and customizing it for the bride and groom. Two excellent sources are Best Man Wedding Speeches and Best Man Bob.

Some of your duties as best man are to congratulate the newly-weds and to thank everyone else - the bridesmaids, other members of the wedding party, and even the guests.

It seems to be traditional for the best man to talk about the groom and to tell amusing anecdotes from your years as friends. Be careful, though. You don't want to embarrass the bride or the families. And there are usually children listening.

And there's a time for serious well-wishing to both the bride and groom.

Don't worry. Once you get started, you'll enjoy yourself! And it really is a great honor to be chosen as the best man.
